Welcome to Year One

Our topic is

'Bright Lights, Big City'

Class Newsletters:     January 2018    November 2017

Throughout the topic, the children will learn all about England’s capital city. We will name and locate the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom. We will also look at what life was like in London in the past, and how it has changed over the years.

In English, we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. We have role played scenes from the event and performed to the class. We will be writing a diary entry as an eyewitness, just like Samuel Pepys. We will then use the structure of the event to write an original story, titled ‘The Great Fire of Longford’. We will adapt the historical event to modern times.

Our class novel: Toby and the Great Fire of London

whats coming up SML211

The children are invited to create a Tudor-style house to recreate our own Pudding Lane (where the Great Fire of London started).

Please note that the houses will need to be in school the week beginning 14th May 2018 ready for a very exciting science experiment.

We are really looking forward to seeing the children’s projects.

Phonics Screening

Children in Year 1 will be taking the National Phonics Screening Check this June. It consists of 40 words, 20 real and 20 'alien' (not real) words. You can help your child prepare for the check by reading with them every day.

Please ensure your child has their reading book and diary in school every day

Children should be reading their reading book at home every day for at least 5 minutes. Please log (date and initial) every time your child reads at home. This will be monitored in school.

Remember to talk about the pictures and ask questions as you are reading together e.g. How does the character feel? Why did the character do that? What do you think will happen next?

Year 1 visit the library every Thursday. Please make sure your child has their library book in school so that they can change it.
