Welcome to Year One

Our topic is

'Dinosaur Planet'

Dinosaur planet1

Class Newsletters:     January 2018    November 2017

Throughout the topic, the children will learn all about dinosaurs and pre-historic life.

We started our topic by hunting for fossils in the sand tray. We looked at the body parts to identify the dinosaur that we found and attached them together to create a 3D model. Later on in the topic we will look at how fossils are formed.

We have learned the names of lots of interesting dinosaur body parts including claws, horns, frill, club, crest, scales, beak, wings, spikes, and have used this vocabulary to describe and compare different dinosaurs. We will learn to identify whether a dinosaur was a herbivore or a carnivore and how we know this based on their appearance.

In English, we will research about a dinosaur and write an information fact file. We will also look at the ‘Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs’ story and will use the structure of this to write our own story.

Our class novel: The Dinosaur's Diary by Julia Donaldson

Reading

Please ensure your child has their reading book and diary in school every day

Children should be reading their reading book at home every day for at least 5 minutes. Please log (date and initial) every time your child reads at home. This will be monitored in school.

Remember to talk about the pictures and ask questions as you are reading together e.g. How does the character feel? Why did the character do that? What do you think will happen next?

Year 1 visit the library every Thursday. Please make sure your child has their library book in school so that they can change it.
