English

In Reading and Writing this half term, we are reading 'Oliver and the Seawigs' by Phillip Reeve and writing a descriptive setting of the sea. We will then be watching an animation called 'The Blue Umbrella' and writing our own version of the romance narrative. 

Our Non-Fiction writing will be based around the work of Mary Anning, linking to our Geography Project- Rocks, Relics and Rumbles. 

We will visit the library once per fornight to enable the children access to a variety of reading books, in addition to their home reading book. Please make sure that children take care of these books at home. 

Maths

In Maths this term, children will be continuing to learn how to multiply and divide using different methods, starting with the use of concrete reources, moving onto pictorial and then a written method. Children will also learn how to measure length accurately using different equipment and use this knowledge to work out the perimeter of different shapes. 

Science - Forces and Magnets

This project teaches children about contact and non-contact forces, including friction and magnetism. They investigate frictional and magnetic forces, and identify parts of a magnet and magnetic materials. 

 

Geography- Rocks, Relics and Rumbles 

In the Rocks, Relics and Rumbles project, your child will learn about the different layers of the Earth, including plate tectonics and their potential effects on the Earth's surface. They will investigate different types of rock to learn about their uses and properties. They will also investigate soil and fossils, including learning about the work of Mary Anning. They will have the opportunity to use maps to learn about the lines of latitude and longitude and a compass to learn about the cardinal and intercardinal points. They will also learn about volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis and the long and short-term consequences that these can have.

Art & Design- Ammonite

 

This project teaches children about artistic techniques used in sketching, printmaking and sculpture.

Design and Technology - Making it Move

This project teaches children about cam mechanisms. They experiment with different shaped cams before designing, making and evaluating a child's automaton toy.

 

PE

On Monday afternoons, children are learning how to play hockey. On Friday afternoons, children are learning how to use and navigate the school grounds, completing Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA). 

 

Middleforth Primary School: Forest School

This term, Mrs Evans will continue to work with Year 3 children in their Forest School sessions. The focus for the first half term is 'fire'. Children will learn about fire safety before finding out what is required to make a safe fire on the school grounds.
