Longford Park Primary School
Curriculum Statement
As in all maintained schools in England, we follow the guidance of the National Curriculum 2014. This dictates the subjects that the children must study, and the knowledge that they must acquire to prepare them for life and learning beyond primary school. Our curriculum design is underpinned by a broad set of principles, which go beyond the academic. We have flexibility within our curriculum design to meet the needs (both intellectual and personal), abilities and interests of all of our children both now and in the future.
Curriculum Intent
Throughout their learning journey at Longford Park, we strive for our children to become life-long learners with ambition and resilience. Our children learn in a happy and safe environment, fostering respect and acceptance for themselves, each other and the world around them. We provide a broad and exciting curriculum in which we promote and celebrate British Values and children enjoy their learning. In partnership with parents, Governors and the wider community, we holistically preparn our children for their futures lives and enable them to develop to the best they can be as unique individuals.
At Longford Park Primary School we ‘Work Together and Learn Forever’.
Our Curriculum will give children the opportunity to;
- Develop and extend their knowledge and skills across a broad and balanced range of subjects;
- Build knowledge and skills coherently both within and across well-sequenced lessons, units, themes and years;
- Identify and explicitly learn key vocabulary in context;
- Develop reading and oracy across all curriculum areas;
- Understand the purpose of their learning and see its relevance to their past, present and future;
- Be nurtured physically, socially and emotionally;
- Experience a learning environment which goes beyond that of the classroom;
- Celebrate their achievements, grow in self-confidence and have aspirations for their future.

Phonics:
We teach phonics using the DfE validated scheme 'Essential Letters and Sounds' (ELS)
Ofsted 2022 quote: 'Leaders have introduced an appropriate phonics scheme to help pupils learn to read fluently. In Reception, children are becoming confident in reading the sounds they have learned.'
Reading Schemes:
We are currently using Oxford Reading Tree as our main reading scheme. It is supplemented with other schemes as and when required.
Ofsted 2022 quote: 'Pupils who find it difficult to read fluently receive suitable support to catch up. This means that nearly all pupils are now reading at a level that matches their age. Reading is promoted well throughout the school. Pupils enjoy their daily reading lessons and they talk with enthusiasm about the books that their teachers share in class.'
Maths:
For Maths, we use and adapt White Rose Maths materials to support a bespoke delivery of the Mathematics curriculum from Years 1 to Year 6. Their website can be found here. Please see the supporting materials for parents and the home learning videos if you wish to support your child further at home. In Nursery and Reception, staff use resources which support the White Rose Curriculum, ensuring that children have a secure foundation in early number.
Writing:
In Writing, we use high quality texts throughout the school from Nursery - Year 6 to promote a secure understanding of, and exposure to, a range of genres. These texts are used to immerse children into reading and writing, modelling to them how to become a reader who writes and a writer who reads. Children are supported with their use of vocabualry, sentence structure, grammar and puncutuation through small chunks in learning, based on an approach called 'The Write Stuff' by Jane Considine. Pupils experience engaging experience days to enthuse and inspire their writing across different writing genres.
Learning Outside the Classroom:
At Longford Park, we value learning beyond that of the classroom. Opportunities are maximised to utilise our school grounds and the local area as well as exploring places further afield, to enhance children's experiences and engage their curiosities.
Our older children also take advantage of a residential visit; as well as adventurous activities off site to further develop their independence and resilience as they prepare to transition to secondary school.
We are proud to have earned the prestigious Silver award for Learning Outside the Classroom, which recognises the work the school has put in to meet our curriculum aims.
