Welcome to Year 5!
History project - Tudors
Travel back in time to the 1500s and meet the terrifying Tudors, a domineering dynasty that changed our history. Discover an opulent court where dancing and singing goes hand in hand with swift falls from favour, and even swifter falling of heads. How did the Tudors come to rule? What was the War of the Roses all about? We will learn about significant figures including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and the influence they exerted at court and the impact their decisions had on the population and around the world. What impact did the Reformation have on the country and the kingdom? Why did Henry VIII order the dissolution of the monasteries to take place? We will also investigate crime and punishment of the period and what would happen if you needed medical help.
Science - Properties and Changes of Materials
In the Properties and Changes of Materials project, your child will revisit prior learning about the properties of materials. They will plan and carry out tests to determine the properties of a range of materials. They will use their results to suggest suitable materials for different purposes. They will learn about the property of thermal conductivity and identify materials that are thermal conductors and insulators. They will also learn about the property of solubility and test various materials to discover which are soluble and insoluble. They will ask scientific questions about separating unusual mixtures and research to find out the answers. They will learn the difference between reversible and irreversible changes and follow instructions to observe the signs of an irreversible change first hand.
English
Our English lessons this term will be focused on the Shakespeare play, Macbeth. We will be reading a retelling by Andrew Matthews and Tony Ross. We will start our unit with a whole day led by an outside group immersed in the play. We will then have 4 days immersive reading experience allowing all the children to hear, read and discuss the story. We will then look at the plot, characters and setting in more detail using extracts from our choosen text. We will then write a class version of the story before children plan and write their own version. We will also complete a diary based on Lady Macbeth and her role in the play.
