Preparing for the Year 4 National Times Tables check

In June the children will complete the Multiplication Tables Check set by the government. For more information click here.

Our aim this year is for all children to know all the times tables up to 12 x 12. One of the best ways of supporting your child to achieve this is by encouraging them to access Times Table Rockstars as often as possible.

Autumn

During the Autumn term, your child will first build upon their knowledge of place value by representing, comparing, ordering and rounding numbers up to 10,000. Next, your child will learn how to add and subtract numbers up to 4 digits (including multiple exchanges) using the formal column methods. After that, they will learn about area. This unit provides a nice opportunity to combine chocolate and home learning; click here to find out more. The final unit of the term is multiplication and division A. Your child will deepen their understanding of the of 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables, clear up misconceptions surrounding multiplying by 1 and 0 before finally looking at multiplying 3 single digits together.

Spring

After the Christmas break your child will continue their maths learning with Multiplication and Division Unit B. This unit involves multiplying by 10, 100, dividing by 10 and 100, the formal method for multiplying 1 digit by 2 digits and 1 digit by 3 digits. The remainder of this topic focuses on division (we have opted to introduce 1 formal division method in Year 4 - the bus stop method). Next, your child will learn about length (Measuring in M and KM and Equivalent lengths) and perimeter (Perimeter of a rectangle, Perimeter of rectilinear shapes and Perimeter of polygons). The penultimate unit of the term is fractions. Your child will touch upon partitioning and ordering mixed fractions, before learning how to convert them to improper fractions. Towards the end of the unit, the class will look at equivalent families as well as adding and subtracting fractions. Year 4 encounter decimals for the first time in our final unit of the Spring term. The start of the unit focuses on looking at tenths as both decimals and fractions, before moving on to dividing 1 digit numbers by 10 and 2 digit numbers by 10. The last lessons of Spring term look at hundredths as decimals and fractions, before learning how to divide a 1 or 2 digit number by 100.

Summer

After Easter, your child will return for their final term in Year 4. The first topic of the Summer term is a continuation of Decimals. The first lessons provide an element of retrieval, by revisiting making wholes with tenths and hundredths. Next, your child will learn about partitioning, comparing, ordering and rounding decimals, before looking at halves and quarters as decimals. Next is money, where the class will learn how to convert between pounds and pence, compare, estimate and calculate money (including word problems). The Time unit helps your child to understand the Gregorian Calendar, hours, minutes and seconds, how to convert between analogue and digital time, convert to the 24 hour clock and from the 24 hour clock. After Money is Shape. First, your child will compare angles, then they will investigate triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons before learning about symmetry. Statistics is a short unit, where Year 4 will learn how to interpret charts and line graphs, in preparation to draw their own line graphs. The final unit your child will learn about in Year 4 is Position and Direction. First, your child will describe positions using co-ordinates, prior to plotting them. Next, they will draw 2D shapes on a grid, before translating shapes. In the eventuality that there is additional time at the end of the school year, your child will repeat lessons to cover gaps and address misconceptions.
